How to avoid big tech (privacy)?

9 june 2022 (updated 28 jan 2023)

Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta and Google are known to be systems that spy on people, keep all the information and even sell it for profit without their users’ knowledge.

In addition, many are talking about the implementation of a social credit system that these people will use to categorize and discriminate people like in China.

How do we get out of this?

Here is a list that can help us

One of the easiest things, or maybe the hardest, is to not use big tech devices/apps/social networks/websites.

Operating system

Use an operating system other than Mac OS and Microsoft, such as Linux.

Use open source applications instead of using Word, Excel, photoshop, Zoom, Whatsapp, Chrome, etc. that are privacy oriented.

Instead of using Androit or Iphone, use a DeGoogle phone (Android phone without Google). Use Linux applications instead of big tech applications. Degoogle phone:

The best browser for security/privacy: Tor

Sometimes there are websites that don’t work with the Tor browser in which case you can use: Chromium is what Chrome is without the google spy.
Unstoppable browser:

Apart from Tor to protect your privacy, it is best to have a VPN to hide your IP address. Again it is best to go for vpns that are open source like SoftEther VPN, Sentinel, Calyx VPN, Wireguard

For best security, use a different browser for each thing you do, for example :

1- One browser for shopping and using your debit/credit cards.
2- One browser for everything Google (Google should be avoided as much as possible),
3- One browser for searching anything,
4- One browser for Facebook/instagram (also avoid anything Meta).
To better isolate facebook, use Firefox Facebook container extension or use a virtual machine:

Extension in each browser: Privacy badger and Ublock origin

Prevent your browser from storing your information such as username, password or credit cards; instead use a browser extension that is private, such as Bitwarden or

If your browser allows it, use the function ”Private browsing mode”.

Instead of clicking on a link, it is safer to copy and paste it.

In the browser options, you can play with the security/privacy settings.

Internet search engine:

Lokinet is a decentralised onion router that uses Oxen service nodes as relays, giving Lokinet the same market-based Sybil attack resistance as the Oxen blockchain. Lokinet supports web browsing, onion-routed real-time voice communications, and other applications.

Have 6 different emails: one for work, one for personal, one for shopping, one for the most secret things, one for facebook and all Meta stuff, one for google and its relatives like Youtube.

the best: Tutanota, protonmail, Mailfence, StartMail,,

Email is the worst form of communication in terms of security and privacy. If it is not encrypted, it is very easy to intercept an email and having information about you. For example, Tutanota allows you to encrypt emails and this is done automatically between tutanota users.

If you receive an email that you don’t know or are not sure about, don’t click on the links. If you really want to open it, copy it and open it in the Tor browser.

The best way to communicate is to use applications like Session, Status, Beechat, Briar or others decentralized, open-source, encrypted applications.

To do or not to do?

NEVER use the two-way authentication system which only serves to steal your information.

If you are not using your computer or the internet, disconnect from the internet. Connect your devices with cable rather than wifi for security and health reasons.

If you are not using bluetooth, disable it. If you do not use the location service, disable it. Connect Wifi, bluetooth and location only when you need it.

The password must be longer than 15 characters. Don’t use 3 instead of E or things like that, AIs know this. It can be like this: jrqPwuHXUE52y4DHZgEE but very hard to remember or like this: mybestMomentofmylife99%.

Security questions, always lie in these questions because there is a high chance that Google or Facebook know the answer.

Social media

For social media: it is advisable to change some settings to improve your online privacy. These include:

Not using location data when posting
Preventing users from tagging you in photos
Hide your email address and phone number
Turning off personalization and data
Do not give Twitter (or any social media) permission to access your address book

Facebook alternatives:,,

Avoid anything that falls under artificial intelligence on your phone or in the house, like: Amazon Echo, Apple HomePod, Google home, Google assistance, Siri, Alexa, etc.

Avoid wifi security systems, opt for wired systems. Never put a security camera or your phone in the direction of your computer to avoid them taking note of your passwords.

Youtube alternatives:,,,,

If you really need to use Youtube: to use in a private way.

Instead of office (word, excel etc ): libreoffice

Instead of zoom: Jitsi or Jami

Cloud storage:

Instead of Googledoc:

3 equivalent to google maps but protects your privacy and information:

To discover:

Discover the IPFS world, the decentralized world.

Qortal: build a decentralized internet

Start9: sovereign computing with the personal server

Every time you buy from Amazon, Walmart, Home Depot, Cosco etc. you give your money to Big tech. Buy local from the small business, farmers even if it is more expensive. You help your neighbor instead of giving money to people who don’t care about you.
Every time you use Youtube, Google, Facebook. Instagram, etc. you give money to Big tech.
Every time you pay for a Netflix, Disney, etc. subscription you are giving your money to Big tech.
Big tech doesn’t want your good. Don’t encourage them!

Yes it’s more complicated and time consuming, but at what cost?
