Protonmail has had serious security/privacy problems in the past. It’s hard to know if there won’t be more of these situations. Tutanota, on the other hand, is very similar to Protonmail and has not had any such problems since its existence.
We recommend, if you open a new account, to go with Tutanota.

If you value privacy…it’s time to open a protonmail account.
You don’t have to close your other accounts straight away. Just start the migrating process until your old account is no longer needed.
Reignite Freedom and The Global Walkout have led by example and migrated all our accounts to Protonmail ahead of this step so we could verify its usability. We aren’t going to lie to you, there is some aspects that might take some getting used to. However, the feeling of security outweighs ANY inconveniences we encountered.

The third step is to unsubscribe from all mainstream media outlets. Delete the apps from your phone, laptop, and tablet and unfollow all of their social media and YouTube channels. Try to avoid mainstream media for at least one week, even if the headline is intriguing.
In the same time why not removing all the big tech tracking/spying/social credit system around you: (Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tik Tok, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Whatsapp, Zoom, Linkedln, Snapchat, Tumblr, Pinterest, Reddit, Myspace, etc.)
The fourth step of the global walkout is to move as many accounts as you can to a union or local bank.
